1968

Mdina Glass starts operation, becoming a pioneering company in Malta in the field of glassmaking. This is the first of many firsts for Mdina Glass.

1970

Just two years old and Mdina Glass begins to participate in International Trade Fairs.

Mdina Glass starts exporting to Italy and America.


1971

Two Italian maestros introduce Italian glassmaking techniques.

Mdina Glass commences exports to UK. The UK is the company’s main overseas market in direct and indirect exports.

1972

Mdina Glass welcomes Princess Anne as part of a state visit to Malta.

1975

As the company’s Production Manager, Joseph Said becomes the catalyst for a number of changes and revolutionises the way the company operates and what it produces.

1976

Mdina Glass increases the number of skilled glassmakers and output to meet considerable increase in demand of their products and enhance quality control.

Exports to German begin.

Use of crystal cutting technique begins.

1983

Mdina Glass starts exporting to Japan.

1985

Joseph Said becomes owner of Mdina Glass.

1986

Under the new ownership, Mdina Glass invests heavily in new equipment and researching new techniques.

1987

Mdina Glass wins the International Award for Tradition & Prestige in Brussels.

Exports to France begin.

1989

Mdina Glass presents a glass sculpture to the Maltese Prime Minister to commemorate the Bush – Gorbechov Malta summit.


1992

The company wins the Malta Achievement In industry award.

Exports to Greece commence.

Basic raw materials are changed for those of a much higher quality.

1993

Company starts exporting to Cyprus.

Mdina Glass introduces lampworking in Malta.

1996

Former President of the United States of America, Jimmy Carter and First Lady visit Mdina Glass.

Nevise Said, eldest daughter of Managing Director Joseph Said, joins the company. Nevise oversees local sales and exports.

1997

Mdina Glass introduces fusion techniques to Malta.

1998

The company starts exporting to Holland.

1999

Pamela Said joins the company and manages the company’s retail section.

2000

Exports to Spain begin as well as gaining new clients in the UK and Cypriot markets.

Olivia Said joins the company, taking care of production and product development.

Production expands; the artistic team increases to help the company produce designer pieces and limited editions.

The company penetrates the Maltese market heavily.

2001

The company participates in a number of international fairs, including Macef (Milan).


2002

Mdina Glass creates works for prestigious contracts such as:

  • Corinthia Towers, Tripoli
  • Intercontinental Hotel, Malta
  • The Hilton, Malta

2003

Mdina Glass starts to work with a number of professional interior designers.

Opening of new retail outlet in Malta’s capital city, Valletta.

New export markets such as Hungary and Russia are targeted.

New Italian glassmaking techniques are incorporated (such as incalmo, filigrana and murrine) for the first time in Malta.

The company takes its first steps into cyberspace with its own website.
